Spending Time with God

Written with: DEDICATION

Come close to God and God will come close to you.
~ James 4:8 NLT

By design, we have a desire to spend more time with God.  We put it on our to-do list, but as the day goes by, it falls further and further down the list. Before we know it, we have not spent any time with our Father, and it’s time for bed.  Then we tell God, “Tomorrow, I’ll do better.”

Believe us, we have all been there.  Our days can be so hectic, we don’t know if we are coming or going.  So logically, we put off the items we think are more forgiving.  The problem with this logic is God will always be forgiving, so when would we ever make Him a priority?

In order for anything to be at the top of our lists, it needs to have great significance.  We need to understand why it should be ranked higher than anything else we have planned for the day.  On the surface, this is a no-brainer.  Therefore, if we accept that God is the head of our lives, why wouldn’t He get first dibs? Because in reality, we don’t quite grasp the true value of putting Him first.

~Why Is Spending Time So Important?~

Anytime we interact with God, peace surrounds us during and after the interaction.  It gives us energy, motivation, comfort, and joy.  These are all qualities we need to get us through the day.  And with every encounter, our relationship with God grows stronger and stronger.  Stronger relationships bring discernment and direction, which are also needed to get us through the day.

Now, we know what comes next.  We can definitely appreciate the value but just don’t see fitting quality time with God as possible.  We have kids to get to school, early morning meetings, and our schedules are jam-packed for the day or we already wish there was more time.

Well, the awesome news is, if we give God time, He will give us more time.  So, the first step is not to worry about losing time.  He already has that covered.

The next step is to be intentional.  While God has us covered, we have to do our part as well. Plan accordingly.  If you want to spend time in the morning, prepare for the next morning and go to bed at a decent time.  If you want to spend time at night, accomplish everything by a certain time or move it to the next day.   If you want to spend time with God during the day, put it as a meeting on your calendar so no other meetings can be scheduled during that time.

~Now What?~

Now that we have the time allocated, let’s review some of the ways we can actually connect with God.  Remember, it doesn’t have to be long, and it can be multiple times throughout the day.  He just wants to feel our presence.

  1. Read the Word/Start a bible plan
  2. Take a walk and talk to God
  3. Write a letter to God
  4. Talk to God during your morning/afternoon commute (this is a form of prayer)
  5. Pray
  6. Meditate
  7. Dance to your favorite gospel song
  8. Write a song or poem for God
  9. Draw or paint God a picture
  10. Attend church (online/physical) or Bible study

There is no right or wrong way to spend time with God ― just do it!  And once ideas start flowing, it’s easy to simply pick one and enjoy connecting.   Much like with any relationship, we might have to get a little creative, so things won’t become mundane.   Therefore, let your creativity flow and relish in the beautiful effects of spending time with God.

In the comments below, tell us the different ways you’ve connected with God.
