Focus Area: Identify Your Obstacles
Do you blame your circumstances, other people, or even yourself for the negativity in your life?
This gloomy reality can take over your everyday joy, and you feel powerless ― so powerless, you may think there is no hope. And before you know it, depression has taken root. At that moment, the mastermind behind it all smiles as he adds another win to his board and moves on to the next.
Looking at your situation and saying, “This is Satan’s work!” may not be the first thought that comes to mind. Why? Because it’s so real, so up close and personal, it's hard for you to see it. Perhaps, only in hindsight do you completely grasp his handiwork ― his perfect plot to have you doubting yourself and God. You tell yourself that next time you will be prepared. But you see, in order to prepare, you need a plan. Let’s create yours now!
Learn about the Enemy
Studying all the Devil’s traits, deceits, schemes, and motives, will help you recognize him at the onset. It gives you a leveled playing field because he has already studied you. He knows what makes you happy, sad, mad, and angry. Why not know the same about him? Take some time to read what the Bible says about the Devil, his personality, strengths, and weaknesses.
Here are just a few scriptures to help you get started.
Father of Lies (liar) – “For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44).
Tempter (one who tempts people to sin) – “And the tempter came and said to Him, ‘If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.’ ” (Matthew 4:3).
Accuser (one who condemns) – “Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens, ‘It has come at last—salvation and power and the Kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down to earth—the one who accuses them before our God day and night’ ” (Revelation 12:10).
Shrewd, Clever, Wise – “The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, ‘Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?' ” (Genesis 3:1).
Great actor – “But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14).
The Armor of God – “Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11).
Our Resistance – “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).
God’s Peace – “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. May the grace of our Lord Jesus be with you” (Romans 16:20).
Do you feel you are starting to know Satan personally? Good! In part 2, you will apply what you know about him and write out the specific areas in your life where he has been present.
